Castle of Sant Joan
The first mountain of the Costa Brava is fortified with an 11th-century castle. It was an obvious choice since it offers a commanding view of the Tordera Estuary and the entire lower valley of the river, with Blanes in the foreground.
The Viscounts of Cabrera were the lords of the castle almost from this time. Later on, in the 14th century, when the fortification was known as Blanes Castle, the main residence of the viscounts became the elegant castle-palace which they had built in the town of Blanes. The 15-metre-high keep is still standing and the ruined walls make it possible to trace the outline of the castle, which was abandoned once and for all in the 16th century.
The castle chapel dedicated to Sant Joan stands next to it. This building survived and has functioned as a chapel uninterruptedly to this day. In fact, the castle ended up being named after it.
