There are many fortified farmhouses on the Selva Plain. They are neither castles nor fortified houses but most of them retain a tower, which was an essential element for their defence and survival.

Set in the heart of the plain, one tower stands above all the others. It is the Ponsa Tower, a five-storey quadrangular fortification attached to a farmhouse with Gothic and Renaissance-style windows, loopholes and a more modern gallery at the top, all bearing witness to its long history.

Although lacking in some of the grandeur of the county’s castles and walled towns, these farmhouses with towers also give us plenty of insight into the turbulent past of an area rich in historical events.
