Fornils Castle
The hamlet of Fornils stretches along the rolling slopes at the foot of the El Far Cliffs. As you approach it from Sant Martí Sacalm, you come across series of ancient farmhouses located in the most unlikely spots of this edge of the county, as beautiful as it is isolated and unknown.
The remains of Fornils Castle are found in the middle of this delightful area, at the top of a hill straining to stand out from the surrounding elevations. A sizeable section of wall with loopholes still protects the interior, where the main room of the castle and the keep can still be made out, among other remains.
For most of the Middle Ages, Fornils Castle was the administrative centre of what today is the municipality of Susqueda. Together with Rupit and its castle it formed the barony of Rupit. So, essential fragments of our country’s history are also preserved in places as forgotten and silent as this one.
