It is said that the body of Sant Iscle was brought from Cordoba to Vidreres in 1010, following the sacking of the capital of the Caliphate of Cordoba. It is also said that the relics of the saint ended up at the Chapel of Sant Iscle, located at the top of a hill two kilometres away from the town.

The excavation of the castle has been ongoing since 2005 but the saint’s bones have not been found there to date. However, the archaeological work is succeeding in unearthing this fortification belonging to the Viscount of Cabrera, which operated from the 12th to the 15th century and from where the municipality of Vidreres was governed.

The results have been spectacular: the entire ground floor of the castle, with four corner towers and several rooms arranged around an arcaded courtyard, had been buried by the debris of the upper floors of the castle and is gradually emerging year by year. The same process has been carried out with the chapel and the moat that surrounds the complex will also be excavated. At the moment, visitors can climb up and have a look at what has been recovered so far of the second largest castle in the county of Selva.
