Ametllers Roman Villa

Avinguda del Pelegrí (opposite the Casa de Cultura) - Tossa de Mar
Easy. Town centre.  ·

The Ametllers Roman Villa or Villa Vitalis is one of the most important Roman sites in the north-east of Catalonia. The excavation work, carried out in several stages between 1914 and 2006, has uncovered almost all the residential part (the pars urbana) and one sector of the part devoted to agricultural activities (the pars rustica).

Perched on the sunny side of Can Magí Hill, some of the rooms of the residential part of the villa (the upper terrace) are paved with pretty tesserae mosaics. It has been possible to identify summer and winter dining rooms, rooms for receiving guests, private rooms, kitchens, baths with pools for hot, lukewarm and cold water, a precise water circulation and hydraulic system and two monumental gardens.

Meanwhile, on the lower terrace, there are areas devoted to farming and storage, including a series of storage pits and four wine-pressing rooms.

The villa functioned between the 1st century BC and the 5th century AD and was the embryo of the future town of Tossa. The Municipal Museum of Tossa de Mar is well worth a visit to see the mosaic and the finds that have been unearthed in this villa.
