The Church of Santa Maria, built close to the Monastery of Sant Salvador, was the parish church of Breda until the 19th century, when the Benedictine community was forced to abandon the monastery and the parish functions were transferred to the Church of Sant Salvador in order for Santa Maria to house the municipal offices.

It is a 12th-century building, as indicated by the semicircular apse and the nave, which is at the west end. Two Gothic side chapels were later added and significant alterations were carried out on the west end in the 18th century, including the construction of the bell tower.

Today, the Romanesque part of the church houses the Josep Aragay Municipal Museum, while the rest of the building serves as Breda Town Hall.
