The Sanctuary of Mare de Déu de Farners, dating from the 18th century, is a place of devotion not only for the local community but for the county as a whole. It is set in the heart of the Guilleries Massif, at the foot of the hill on which the mediaeval Farners Castle stands. The construction of the sanctuary was ordered by the lord of the castle, Ramon de Farners and it was consecrated on the day of Sant Jordi in 1200 by the Bishop of Girona, Arnau de Creixell.

Although somewhat concealed by the dimensions of the sanctuary, if you make your way to the rear of the building on the outside, you can see how the original chapel, virtually intact, now serves as the chancel of the modern church. It is a very simple Romanesque construction with a rectangular nave terminated by a semicircular apse, curiously oriented to the north instead of the customary east. Inside the sanctuary it is harder to see, hidden behind the altarpiece and the small shrine in which the image of Mare de Déu de Farners is kept, also dating from the Romanesque period.
