ROUTE 4 Religious romanesque architecture in the county of Selva

Located in Old Catalonia (roughly corresponding to the present-day provinces of Barcelona and Girona), Selva was at the heart of the development of Romanesque architecture between the 10th and 13th centuries. As such, visitors to the county can discover all sorts of buildings in this artistic and architectural style, so characteristic of our country.

On this route you can explore a series of little-known heritage elements, often located in beautiful natural settings. You can visit five monasteries (Santa Maria d’Amer, Mare de Déu del Coll, Sant Pere Cercada, Sant Salvador de Breda and Santa Maria de Valldemaria), several small chapels in the Montseny and Guilleries massifs, and quite a few churches and chapels on the plain in which you can seek out typical Romanesque elements.

Moreover, this heritage is accessible. Most sites can be reached directly by car, although others are a short walk away from the nearest parking area. Various signed walking routes are also available. The most interesting heritage elements have been included in the main route, which as a circular route can be joined at any point. Furthermore, a series of secondary trails have been designed, all connected to the main route.
