Estany de Sils
Sils pond is one of the most important natural spaces of inland Catalonia, as it contains a wide range of habitats such as wetland, floodplains and riparian forests. This mosaic offers a great potential for biodiversity, which is why it is included in the network of Protected Natural Areas of Catalonia (PEIN in its Catalan initials) and forms part of the European network Natura 2000, which encompasses an ensemble of protected spaces within Europe.
Three hundred years ago, the pond was one of the largest in Catalonia, spreading out over approximately seven square kilometres. But in those times, such wetlands were associated with disease, such as malaria, and legends of a hellish nature, which prompted the populace to drain it, practically to nothing, in the mid-19th century. To do so, they build an entire network of drainage channels, all leading to the large central channel that lies before you, called the séquia de Sils, or dry river of Sils, which leads the drained water directly the Santa Coloma dry river.
In 1998 work began on restoring the current lagoon into a permanent pond, which you can find if you follow the riverbed towards Sils. At the same time, the recovery was initiated in several numerous plots with flooded meadows, of great biological richness.
